Mr. President, Madam First Lady, my wife and I are deeply grateful for your extraordinary generosity and hospitality this evening. We could not be more honored to be with you as you celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Allow me first to pay tribute to your courage and resolve, Mr. President, and to the swift action of your security team on Saturday evening. You prevented further harm, and our hearts are with you, the First Lady, and all those affected by that disturbing event. As our famous wartime motto reminds us: “Keep Calm and Carry On.”
I am struck to realize that my first visit to this remarkable country was over 50 years ago. Mr. President, the golden thread of history and heritage that binds our two nations is woven into your own family story. As you mentioned earlier, your family’s roots stretch back to the beautiful landscape of the Outer Hebrides. And, as we all know, that connection endures on the great golf courses of the Scottish Highlands.
I can only imagine how proud your dear mother—and indeed your parents—would be to see you elected and serving this historic second term. It is a particular joy to return to this magnificent building, the very heart of your democracy.
As a direct descendant of King George III, I know something about nations that never give up. Our family’s story is etched across your map—Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Maryland. Though, having said that, our French cousins could equally look at your map and feel at home, too.
Which brings me to your recent observation, Mr. President: that if it were not for the United States, European countries would be speaking German.
Dare I say, if it wasn’t for us, you’d be speaking French.
Of course, we both love our French cousins dearly.
I cannot help noticing the readjustments to the East Wing. I’m sorry to say that we British, of course, made our own small attempt at real estate redevelopment of the White House in 1814.
And, if I may say so, this dinner is a very considerable improvement on the Boston Tea Party.
For 250 years, your audacious and visionary act of self-determination has been an inspiration to the world. From bitter division emerged one of the most indispensable alliances in human history.
Our people have fought and fallen together in defense of the values we cherish: freedom, democracy, the rule of law. We stood together in two World Wars, through the Cold War, after 9/11, and today in supporting the brave people of Ukraine.
Today, our partnerships in NATO and AUKUS deepen our technological and military cooperation, ensuring we can meet the challenges of an increasingly complex world.
Speaking of submarines, there was an AUKUS predecessor launched from a UK shipyard in 1944: HMS Trump. She served primarily with the 4th Submarine Squadron in Australia, critical in the Pacific War.
Tonight, Mr. President, I am delighted to present to you—as a personal gift—the original bell from her conning tower. May it stand as a testament to our shared history and shining future. And should you ever need to get hold of us… just give us a ring!
Ladies and gentlemen, as we look to the next 250 years, let us ignore the clarion calls to become ever more inward-looking.
Our alliance is not merely a legacy of the past—it is a living, breathing promise for the future. To our two proud nations, bound by history, bound by friendship, bound by freedom:
I propose a toast to the past, present, and future of our two proud and allied nations—whether our cups be filled with tea, wine, Scotch, bourbon, or even cola.
To the United States of America.
To the United Kingdom.
Long live our friendship.
